  • Tasting notes

Developed as a style in the early 1700s, Stout and Porter ales are typically dark in colour due to the dominant use of dark malts and roasted barley in the brewing process and are usually of a fairly high ABV (from where the term stout originates) because of the huge early popularity of porters, brewers made them in a variety of strengths. The beers with higher gravities were called “Stout Porters”. There is still division and debate on whether stouts should be a separate style from porter. Usually the only deciding factor is strength, although modern Porters tend to be sweeter than the best known Stout’s which tend to be dryer in flavour due to the added use of oatmeal in the mash.
